American Painter 1958 - 1990 Keith Haring graduated from Kutztown Area Senior High School in 1976 and spent some time traveling across America before studying at the Art Centre in Pittsburgh In the summer of 1980 he took up drawing, inventing intricate cartoon-style murals of mutant Figures locked in hyper physical engagement. Keith Haring was commissioned to paint murals all over the world. |

Materials:
Manila Drawing Paper, 9x12 for practice. 9x12 White drawing paper for final piece, ruler to border paper, pencil, black markers, color markers, Haring Handout, Examples, glue |
Activities:
Students are introduced to the cartoon art of Keith Haring. Students watch as teacher demonstrates how to draw the Figures. Students are given a step by step handout for reference. See example of handout on left. Students will practice figures on manila paper. Students complete their composition design and transfer onto white paper. Paper is 9x12 and has a 1" border all around the outside edges. Once the figures are placed on the white paper, students will outline with black sharpie marker. Bright colors are used to color in the figures. The background may include texture by adding lines, dots or empty shapes over the bright colored background. Black marker is only used for outlines and texture. Students will cut the paper and glue onto on black construction paper (See teacher for cutting) |
